What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a strong, permanent and very realistic way to replace one or more missing teeth. Not surprisingly, they are becoming extremely popular with patients.

A dental implant is a tiny titanium post which is gently placed into your jaw bone. Over time, the bone and the titanium bond together, forming a permanent artificial tooth root.

We can then use this artifical root to support a crown, bridges, or even dentures, giving you a full, natural-looking smile and enabling you to eat and speak with confidence.

Should I be worried about having a dental implant?

Implant surgery is actually surprisingly easy from the patient's perspective, with many patients saying it is much less traumatic than a tooth extraction or root canal treatment.

The first stage is a thorough examination and evaluation with us to ensure that you are suitable for implant treatment.

Some patients may need to undergo treatment to improve the health of their gums, or to increase the amount of bone in the implant site. Once this is succesfully completed, the implant can be placed.

How long will a dental implant take?

The actual implant placement surgery usually only takes around 15 minutes. The area around the implant is completely numbed up, so you won't feel anything. We have to use a drill, but it is very different from the high-pitched dental drills that so many people hate - all you will feel is a gentle vibration. If you are particularly nervous about the procedure, we can offer you sedation.

You do not have to have a gap in your teeth during treatment - we will be able to provide you with a comfortable, temporary replacement.

After your surgery, we will see you regularly to ensure that everything is healing well. After around 9-12 months, your implant should be completely integrated with your jaw bone, and we will be able to place your new crown, bridge or veneers.
